Witnesses Sought to 2 Fatal Crashes in Suffolk

Patchogue (WALK) - Investigators are hoping to hear from witnesses to two fatal accidents in Suffolk county early Monday, as they try to piece together what happened.

The first crash was the one that shut down Sunrise Highway in Copiague for much of the morning. The driver of a Newsday delivery truck was killed when he lost control of the truck and was ejected as it careened over the center median. The accident happened just after 3 AM near the intersection of Great Neck Road.

The victim has been identified as Newsday employee Michael Buccellato of Central Islip. Police are trying to figure out if he may have had a medical episode before the crash. Buccellato, 51, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The second fatal accident happened on the Sunken Meadow Parkway in Smithtown and took the life of a Brentwood woman. Reina Flores-Chicas, 61, was heading north in her Nissan sedan when the car went off the parkway and hit a tree. She was also pronounced dead at the scene.
