Victim Recovering after Police Shooting in Deer Park

Deer Park - (WALK) A Deer Park man is recovering from surgery today after being shot by police during a domestic dispute Wednesday.

Suffolk Police responded to a 911 call at an apartment complex on Park Center Drive at about 10:30 a.m., and encountered a 40-year-old man involved in a dispute with his father.  The father initiated the call, said police.

Police say younger man had a knife and threatened to behead his father.  One shot was fired, and the man was struck in the chest.  Police say the shooting-victim had psychological problems and was off his medication. They did not say if the victim threatened, or lunged at, the police officers.

The father made the 911 call, and was not injured during the incident.  The younger man was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip for surgery, said police. The incident remains under investigation.
