Vehicle Out of Gas, Pedestrian Struck & Killed on LIE

Holtsville - (WALK) Suffolk police continue their investigation into the case of a Coram man, struck and killed on the Long Island Expressway Tuesday evening.

Ryan Marshall, 24, of Chestnut Street, was driving a 2005 Honda CRV eastbound on the LIE, when his vehicle ran out of gas between exits 62 and 63.  Marshall was crossing the easbound lanes when he was struck by a Ford mini-van owned by the Suffolk County Department of Social Services (DSS) traveling east in the HOV lane shortly before 8:00 p.m., according to Suffolk police.

Police say Marshall was apparently trying to cross the Expressway to reach an SCPD Highway Patrol officer who was parked at the center median.

Marshall was pronounced dead at the scene; the van driver, a 55-year-old Riverhead woman employed by DSS, was uninjured. Eastbound lanes on the LIE were closed near the scene for nearly four hours after the fatal crash, said police.
