Hauppauge - (WALK) The school bus driver accused of selling heroin while off the clock pleaded not guilty following her indictment Wednesday.
Anna Kovarick, 38 (photo), was arrested on April 10 and charged with possessing and selling heroin by investigators from the district attorney's heroin task force.
Kovarick was a 15-year veteran driver for Acme Bus Corp., and was responsible for transporting students to and from private schools in the West Islip area.
Between her morning and afternoon runs Kovarick would drive her own vehicle to conduct her profitable-but-deadly sideline, said Suffolk District Attorney Thomas Spota. Prosecutors said Wednesday Kovarick also dealt drugs to waiting clients in the bus company's lot in Bohemia.
There is no evidence Kovarick operated a bus while using heroin, nor involved any students in her alleged activities, according to DA Spota.
Kovarick allegedly got instructions about heroin pick-ups and deliveries from a boyfriend who is behind bars at the Suffolk County Jail. She is also behind bars at the county jail, being held on $50,000 cash bail or $150,000 bond. Kovarick is scheduled to return to court in May.
