Unexpected Guilty Plea in 2012 Ax Murder

Riverhead (WALK) - The Central Islip man accused in the gruesome ax murder of a neighbor has pleaded guilty to murder, just as his trial was about to get under way.

Aston Barth, 40, admitted killing his friend Jason Campbell, 35, with an ax back in December of 2012 and then hiding the body in his bedroom closet for a week. He could be sent to prison for life when he's sentenced on February 26th.

Barth (pictured at left) did not say why he killed Campbell, who had two young children. The men had been close friends for over 20 years, according to relatives of the victim.

After the murder, Barth wrapped the body in a blanket and left it in his bedroom closet. It was found a week later by Barth's mother and brother.

At the time of the murder, Barth was on parole for a 2007 bank robbery.
