Riverside - (WALK) The search for an elderly grandmother in the Riverhead area ended Sunday with a heartbreaking discovery.
The body of Jean Taber, 82, was found in the David A. Sarnoff Pine Barrens Preserve on Sunday afternoon, three days after she was reported missing. She was last seen walking her dog along County Road 104 on Thursday, south of the Riverwoods Mobile Home Park, where she lived. Taber's body turned up in a wooded area with her loyal cocker spaniel, Freckles, alive by her side, said State Police. The dog appears to be in good health.
The last image of Taber (pictured at left in an older photo) was reportedly captured by a security camera at her mobile home park on Thursday. Two men reportedly told police that they saw Taber in the area that day, spoke to her briefly and even petted her dog.
Taber's family says she suffered from mild dementia and took medication for bipolar disorder.
Freckles was taken to a veterinarian for examination.
