Trial Begins Today in Mother-Baby Gang Slaying

Central Islip (WALK) - A trial begins today in the brutal gang slayings of a teenage mother and her baby son three years ago.

Adalberto Guzman of Central Islip is one of three people charged with luring Vanessa Argueta of Hempstead to a wooded area in Central Islip where she was fatally shot, along with her 2-year-old son Diego Torres. Argueta, 19, reportedly brought the boy with her because she couldn't find a babysitter.

Guzman, 19, is one of three people who prosecutors believe targeted Argueta because she had become involved with a member of a rival gang. Guzman was only 17 years old at the time of the murder.

Another person has already pleaded guilty to the murders. Rene Mejia of Patchogue and is awaiting sentencing. Juan Garcia of Baldwin is also wanted in the case but has not been arrested. Authorities believe Garcia may have fled the country.
