Teen Wearing Earphones Hit by LIRR Train

Center Moriches (WALK) - His earphones almost cost him his life.

An East Moriches teenager was badly hurt yesterday when he was hit by a train as he walked along the tracks in Center Moriches. Authorities say Eric Albrecht was struck around 1 PM as he walked in the same direction as the Montauk-bound Long Island Rail Road train, with his back to the train, as it approached the Speonk station.

The train operator reportedly saw the teen and applied the emergency brakes after blowing the train horn but Albrecht, 16, didn't have time to get out of the way by the time he heard it. He reportedly has injuries on the right side of his body, including a broken hip.

Responders say the teen was awake and alert when they arrived. He was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital and is expected to survive.

MTA police and the LIRR are still investigating but they reportedly say the train was traveling about 60 miles an hour, which would be below the 65 mile and hour posted speed limit in that area.
