Central Islip - (WALK) A Verizon technician faces felony charges for allegedly damaging wires belonging to competitor Cablevision and cutting service to thousands of clients in several Suffolk communities last month, according prosecutors.
Vincent Gargano, 40, of Ridgeway Avenue, Setauket, is charged with criminal mischief and with criminal tampering, a felony, for deliberatly interrupting telephone, utility or other services to the public.
Prosecutors say Gargano damaged Cablevision wires at Patchogue Holbrook Road in Holbrook on January 7 at about 1:30 p.m, interrupting service to approximately 6,000 Cablevision subscribers in Holbrook, South Holbrook, Bohemia and Ronkonkoma for more than five hours.
Gargano was arrested Tuesday, arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip and is free on $500 cash bail.
Verizon issued a statement decrying the alleged vandalism as a risk to public safety, and promising cooperation with police in their investigation.
