Suspects Nabbed in Nail Salon Hold-Ups

Central Islip (WALK) - An Islip Terrace couple has been charged in a series of nail salon robberies across Long Island last month.

Salvatore Scimeca, 55, and Elise Sandberg, 34, are being arraigned today on charges in connection with 5 hold-ups in Suffolk in recent weeks. They are also suspected in 5 additional nail salon robberies in Nassau.

According to investigators, a robber would strike late in the day, around closing time. The man would demand money after pulling a gun. The spree began on December 13th with a hold-up at Nail Tek on Islip Avenue in Islip, Less than an hour later, the same person robbed Diamond Star Nail on Main Street in Islip.

The next robbery took place at Charming Orchid Nail and Spa in Carleton Avenue in Islip Terrace on December 15th. 15 minutes later, the robber hit Queen Mary Nails on East Main Street in East Islip.

The same man struck one last time in Suffolk on December 32st, at Nail Plaza on Montauk Highway in Copiague, according to police.

The robberies in Nassau took place in Valley Stream, Franklin Square, Wantagh and New Hyde Park between December 23rd and 30th. Scimeca and Sandberg are expected to be charged in those hold-ups as well.
