Shoreham - (WALK) Autumn is near, and so may be an opportunity for hiking and biking through a beautiful section of Suffolk County.
Suffolk Executive Steve Bellone signed an agreement with representatives of the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) this week, a significant step forward for plans to create a hiking and biking trail from Port Jefferson to Wading River.
On July 30th Suffolk and LIPA agreed on a no-fee, 25-year lease to secure the route, known as the "Rails to Trail." It will run parallel to Route 25-A and will extend approximately 13 miles along a former Long Island Rail Road line, now used by LIPA as a right of way.
The trail will feature an internationally-significant attraction: it would pass site of the Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe. RBA Engineering, a Melville-based firm, will create designs for the trail and public hearings will be held, according to County officials.
