Hampton Bays - (WALK) One of Long Island's historic party spots will soon honor the history of an African American Coast Guard station.
The Town of Southampton board voted unanimously Tuesday to purchace the old Neptune Beach Club for $3.2 million, and spend $1.2 million to remodel the building to serve as a museum.
The nearly three acre site on Dune Road was once known as Coast Guard Lifeboat Station Tiana, and was active during World War II between 1942 and 1944. It would be dedicated to honor its history and the memory of the people who served there, according to town officials.
Plans include a restaurant/snack concession outside of the old Neptune building and construction of a 500' board walk to the town-owned Tiana Activity Center. Community Preservation funds would be used to restore the building and construct the boardwalk.
