Freeport - (WALK) An investigation continues into what may be a dogfighting operation exposed when firefighters found the bodies of several dogs, pit bulls and pit bull mixes, killed in a garage fire in Freeport.
The fire destroyed a detached one-car garage at the rear of an address on Hillside Avenue at about 2:00 p.m. Friday. 12 dogs were killed in the fire, two were found safe outside the structure. The surviving dogs are with town animal control officers, according to fire officials in Freeport.
Investigators say the property is owned by a Texas resident, who said the house is supposed to be empty.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but a spokesman for the fire marshal's office says the cause does not appear to be suspicious.
