Eastport - (WALK) The search continues for the driver responsible for fatally striking a woman, injuring her male friend, then fleeing the scene Saturday evening.
Erika Strebel, 27, of Eastport and Edward Barton, 26, of East Moriches, were standing near her disabled 1988 Jeep, parked on the shoulder of Montauk Highway near Old Montauk Highway in Eastport when they were struck by a vehicle shortly after 9:00 p.m.
The driver continued eastbound on Montauk Highway; there was no available discription of the vehicle, but it sustained front-end damage, said Suffolk police.
Strebel was taken by ambulance to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead where she was pronounced dead. Barton was transported by police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital, where police say he was treated for injuries to his head and knee.
