SCPD: Man Faked Hit & Run Crash for Cash

Middle Island - (WALK) A Middle Island Man is charged with falsely reporting an incident, for pretending to be the victim of a hit and run crash.

Police say James Matthias, 50, of Artist Lake Drive, Middle Island, walked into the OTB parking lot on Middle Country Road in Centereach on December 31, and intentionally walked into the back of a vehicle that was slowly backing up.

Matthias dropped to the pavement and when the driver got out to check on him he asked if they could settle the matter without involving authorities.  The driver gave Matthias cash and both men left the parking lot at about 1:30 p.m. Matthias later called 911 to report he was injured and the victim of a hit and run crash.

Investigators at Suffolk's 6th Precinct determined Matthias claim was false, and he was arrested at his home Thursday afternoon.

Matthias is charged with making a false written statement, 3rd degree, and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip Friday.
