Central Islip - (WALK) A Central Islip woman is accused driving while impaired by drugs and crashing her SUV into a school bus in Central Islip Wednesday morning.
The driver of the bus managed to get two boys in wheelchairs out of the bus to safety before the vehicle caught fire, according to police.
The suspect, Tyajia Anthony (pictured) 29, of East Cedar Street, Central Islip, crossed a double yellow line while driving southbound on Connectquot Avenue near Ridge Avenue when she crashed head-on into the minibus, at about 8:00 a.m., according to police.
The bus is owned by Suffolk Transportation Service, and was transporting for the Association for the Help of Retarded Children (AHRC). Two adults aboard the bus were treated for minor injuries, the two boys, both age 5, were apparently not injured, said police.
Anthony is charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs and with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. Anthony is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday.
