Riverhead (WALK) - Things are back to normal this morning in one East End community that saw some drama yesterday.
Roads were closed and neighborhoods were evacuated in the Riverside section of Riverhead after a report of a possible live grenade on the shoulder of a roadway. Someone called 911 after seeing the device tossed from a car on Riverleigh Avenue just south of the Riverside traffic circle, near Best Price Auto.
Emergency Services police and arson specialists treated the device as if it were a live explosive. It was safely removed, and Southampton Town Police say it was later rendered safe.
Investigators say they don't know yet if the device actually had the ability to detonate.
The area, which was evacuated around 2 PM, wasn't reopened until around 7 PM.
