Hauppauge - (WALK) Sales tax revenue increased by more than 6 percent in both Suffolk and Nassau in 2013 but still fell short of expectations, according to county officials.
The sales tax total in Suffolk was $1.28 billion in 2013, an increase of 6.75 percent over 2012 but $7.7 million less than projected. Nassau's sales tax take last year was $1.13 billion, an increase of 6.3 percent, but the county budgeted $1.12 billion.
Factors for the fall-off include declining sales during the 4th quarter, and the ongoing trend among Long Islanders to shop online. Online and overseas transactions are difficult to track or tax, say authorities.
