Mineola - (WALK) The competition for top public servant in Nassau was the most expensive political contest ever on Long Island, according to campaign finance reports.
Incumbent County Executive Ed Mangano (R-Mineola) defeated his challenger, former County Executive Tom Suozzi (D-Glen Cove) in November. Mangano spent approximately $5.9 million on his campaign for reelection, Suozzi spent an estimated $4.2 million in a failed effort to win back his old job, according to reports filed this week with the State Board of Elections.
The next-most expensive Long Island campaign was the 2012 contest between incumbent U.S. Congressman Tim Bishop (D-Southampton) and his challenger, Republican Randy Altschuler, who spent a combined $6 million, according to published accounts.
