Police Seek Driver in Fatal Hit-&-Run

Mineola - (WALK) Homicide detectives are on the case of a fatal hit and run crash; the victim is a 13-year-old girl with Down syndrome, struck and killed near her home in Levittown early Sunday.

Bryanna Soplin wandered from her home and was crossing Hempstead Turnpike from the south side of the six-lane road near the Gardeners Avenue intersection when she was struck shortly after midnight, said Nassau police.

Witnesses say the vehicle, a late-model Chrysler Town and Country minivan, did not stop; the driver continued traveling eastbound on Hempstead Turnpike then northbound on the Seaford Oyster Bay Expressway.

Bryanna suffered head and body trauma in the crash.  She was taken to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, where she died at about 4:30 a.m.

Family member say Bryanna may have been trying to visit her grandfather; she was struck less than two miles from his home in Hicksville.
