Police Chase Stops Traffic in Dix Hills

Dix Hills - (WALK) A Sunday morning car chase and crash ended with a bang in Dix Hills when police detonated a suspicious package in the suspect's car.

Police were chasing a speeding car on Commack Road when the object of their pursuit crashed his vehicle into two other cars at about 10:30 a.m..  The suspect's car overturned and slid down the road before coming to a rest about a mile north of Long Island Expressway exit 52.

While removing the driver, officers noticed a backpack inside the flipped-over vehicle and called for specialists to examine it.  Bomb squad members reportedly came equipped with a robotic-device.  Authorities determined detonation was the sensible decision.

One of the two vehicles damaged in the chase was unoccupied; the other reportedly contained a family, including children. Information about their names or their condition was immediately available but witnesses say they were apparently uninjured.

The identity and condition of the driver who sparked the incident was also unavailable, as the investigation continues.
