Yaphank (WALK) - Suffolk police are investigating two tragically similar accidents after dark on busy roadways Wednesday night. In both cases, a pedestrian was killed.
The first crash happened on Montauk Highway in Oakdale around 8:15 PM. Detectives say James O'Brien was trying to cross the road on foot in front of the Lighthouse Commons Shopping Center when he was struck by a Hyundai sedan that was heading west.
The driver has been identified as Jonathan Singh of Port Jefferson Station. Singh, 19, was not hurt and has not been charged with a crime but his car has been impounded for a safety check.
The second accident happened in Selden around 9:30 PM and took the life of a man who hasn't been identified yet by investigators. The victim was crossing County Road 83 at Middle Country Road when he was struck by a Nissan traveling north. Police say he appears to be 55 to 60 years old.
Melanie Purcell of Port Jefferson Station was at the wheel of the Nissan. She was not arrested.
