Passing of Note: Father of Nassau DA Kathleen Rice

Garden City - (WALK) Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday for the father of Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice, Laurence J. Rice.

Rice owned a construction company and was the father of 10 children, he died on December 21, on the eve of his 89th birthday apparently of complications of cancer and a heart condition, according to family members.

Rice was raised in Forest Hills, Queens, a World War II veteran, and graduate of Fordam University.  After earning his degree, he managed the construction company founded in 1911 by his father, an Irish immigrant, Laurnce Rice J. Rice, Inc.

The company participated in portions of prominent projects including at Kennedy Airport, Governors Island, and on Long Island at St. Patrick Church in Huntington and parts of Southampton Hospital, according to pubished accounts.

Rice married his wife Christine in 1953, and the couple moved to Garden City.  Christine Rice died in 2006.

Viewings for Laurence Rice will be held are scheduled for Sunday from 7 to 9:00 p.m. and Monday from 2 to 4:00 p.m. and 7 to 9:00 p.m. at the Fairchild Sons Funeral Home in Garden City.  A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph R.C. Church, 5th Street, Garden City, Tuesday.
