Mineola (WALK) - As police on Long Island reported a big surge in bank robberies so far this year, detectives have nabbed two young men from Melville who allegedly committed 7 heists between them in recent weeks.
Adam Baron, 18, and Jamie Ramirez, 25, are charged in a string of bank hold-ups that began back on December 26th, when the Bethpage Federal Credit Union location in Westbury was robbed. The pair were arrested without incident on Wednesday in the parking lot outside the home they reported share at the Avalon apartment complex.
The other banks they are accused of robbing include the TD Bank in Rockville Centre on January 13th; the Chase bank in North Bellmore on January 17th; the Chase bank in Plainview on January 23rd; the Chase bank in Merrick on January 23rd; the Roslyn Savings Bank in Merrick on January 23rd; and the Chase bank in Farmingdale this past Tuesday.
Before the arrests, police officials in both Nassau and Suffolk confirmed a surge in bank heists so far this year. There have been 21 bank robberies reported since January 1st. That total includes 12 in Suffolk, which had only 19 bank hold-ups in all of 2013.
Baron and Ramirez are scheduled to be arraigned today at First District Court in Hempstead.
