One Dead, Driver Charged with DWI After Crash on Sunrise Highway

East Patchogue (WALK) - An elderly man is dead and his grandson is charged with drunk driving after a crash on Sunrise Highway Monday.

According to police, Gary Hendricks of Mastic was headed east just past Route 112 when his Chevrolet Suburban rear-ended a pickup truck. The SUV went up an embankment on the shoulder and flipped over several times.

Hendricks' grandfather Isaac Beal, 77, was one of three passengers in the car. He was ejected from a back seat during the crash and pronounced dead at the scene.

Two other passengers in the SUV were also hurt. Donald Fowler, 62, of West Babylon was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital and is now in critical condition. Tina Downes, 47, of Medford, who was seated in front, has injuries that are not life-threatening and was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center.

The driver of the pickup truck and his passenger were not hurt, according to police.

Hendricks, 45, is charged with driving while intoxicated and aggravated driving without a license.
