Shirley - (WALK) Federal investigators say the pilot killed in a small plane crash in Shirley last summer was warned not to fly the plane, according to a report by federal investigators.
According to the report by the National Transportation Safety Board, the pilot, David McElroy, 53, of Orient, was told by a mechanic the plane had a faulty engine-speed indicator, and warned not to fly the aircraft. The mechanic was not identified in the report.
The single-engine Socata TB10 crashed shortly after takeoff from Brookhaven Calabro Airiport on August 19, 2012. McElroy and a passenger, Jane Unhjem 60, were killed in the crash. Unhjem's husband Erik, 61, was critically injured.
The full N.T.S.B. report will be released in four to six weeks, according to authorities.
