Mineola (WALK) - The Long Beach teenager accused of murdering another teen on a footbridge at Mill Pond in Rockville Centre has pleaded not guilty.
Maxwell Sherman, 18, was held without bail after his arraignment yesterday. Sherman (pictured at right) has been charged with second degree murder.
The body of the victim, Lauren Daverin of Lynbrook, was discovered last Thursday night on the footbridge, which spans part of Merrick Road. She was last seen alive about an hour before that, police say. Daverin, 18, had been strangled, and her body was bloody and partially disrobed, according to detectives.
Before his arrest, Sherman reportedly gave TV interviews where he admitted that he and Daverin were both with a group of teens that had been hanging out on the footbridge that night, though he didn't know her before that.
Daverin was married 10 months ago, according to friends. Her husband is in the Air Force and is stationed in Louisiana. Airman 1st Class Kashawn Gresham returned to Long Island over the weekend and was among several victims' relatives and friends who were in court for Sherman's arraignment.
A wake for Daverin is being held today and tomorrow at the Vernon C. Wagner Funeral Home in Hicksville. Her funeral is scheduled for Wednesday at the Cemetery of the Holy Rood in Westbury.
