Ronkonkoma (WALK) - Coming soon to Long Island: a cheap ride to Florida.
Local officials will announce today that Allegiant Travel Company, an airline based in Las Vegas, will begin offering service between Long Island MacArthur Airport and the Fort Myers area by the end of the year. The new service is expected to launch on December 20th.
The airline will begin its service to and from Long Island with only one departure to Punta Gorda Airport each week, every Friday evening. One return flight will be scheduled every Monday.
For many Long Islanders, the best part of the new service will be its cost. The airline plans to offer introductory an round-trip fare of $99 per person, or $69 one way.
Times have been tough for MacArthur Airport, which lost almost half its daily flights between 2007 and 2012, a victim of the economy and airline consolidation. Allegiant, however, becomes the second airline to begin serving travelers at MacArthur Airport this year. Last month, PenAir began service between Long Island and Boston.
