Nassau Cop Injured Making Shoplifting Arrest

Garden City (WALK) - A local police officer needed a trip to the hospital over the weekend after a close encounter with an alleged shoplifter.

The officer had been called to Roosevelt Field in Garden City, where security guards reported seeing two people shoplifting at several stores in the mall. An officer tried to arrest one suspect in the mall parking lot as he drove off with the stolen merchandise, but detectives say the suspect slammed his speeding Acura into the officer's patrol car. He then tried to drive off but abandoned his damaged Acura a short distance away and fled on foot.

The police officer was taken to an area hospital to have his injuries checked. He was treated but released.

Whle that first suspect is still at large, the other suspect is in police custody. Officers spotted Olga Carriazo of the Bronx at a bus stop near Roosevelt Field. Carriazo, 28, is charged with petit larcency.

Carriazo is also charged with a shoplifting incident at the mall earlier this month. It was taped by a security camera at the True Religion store on October 11th.

Anyone who might be able to lead police to the other suspect is asked to contact Nassau Crime Stoppers (800) 244-TIPS. All callers can remain anonymous.
