East Islip - (WALK) School district officials say Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School is cleaned-up and safe for children, after a staff-member contracted the potentially-dangerous staph infection, MRSA.
MRSA is a bacterial staph infection that is resistant to many antibiotics. The infected person is now recovering at home, according to the school district website. Classrooms and common areas throughout the school were sanitized as a precaution, and the school was in session Monday.
Health officials say the spread of MRSA can be prevented by thorough hand-washing, and children who have open wounds should have those potential entry-points covered before attending classes.
Earlier this year cases of MRSA were confirmed at Farmingdale State College and at LIU Post.
