Man Attacked in his Wheelchair on the East End

Riverhead (WALK) - Detectives are asking for tips from the public to track down four thugs who robbed a wheelchair-bound man earlier this month as he left church.

The victim wasn't hurt in the June 1st attack in Riverhead, but he was robbed of cash and prescription medication. Police have offered a $5,000 reward for tips that lead to an arrest.

The attack took place around 10:30 PM near the Long Island Rail Road tracks on Maple Avenue, shortly after the victim had left the nearby United Methodist Church. Police say he was knocked out of the wheelchair and struck with weapons, possibly sticks or pipes, before he was robbed.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Suffolk Crime Stoppers at (800) 220-TIPS or the Riverhead Town Police Detective Division at (631) 727-4500 ext. 327. Police say that all calls will be kept confidential.
