Long Island Marathon Road Closures

East Meadow - (WALK) One of our region's most popular annual sporting events is running this weekend: the RXR Long Island Marathon.  Authorities say thousands of participants and spectators will attend the race in Uniondale and East Meadow Sunday.

Sunday's 42nd annual event features a 10K, half-marathon, and the main event: the 26.2-mile marathon.

The Marathon, half-marathon and 10K runs will begin at Charles Lindbergh Boulevard, adjacent to Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale at 8:00 a.m. and conclude at Eisenhower Park, East Meadow.  As many as 8,000 runners are expected to participate, according to organizers.

County officials say there is no specific safety threat this year, but following last year's fatal bombings at the Boston Marathon, Nassau police will employ enhanced security practices throughout the events:

Spectators will be forbidden to bring bags into the finish line area; participants may only check possessions in clear bags provided by officials at check-in; K-9 dogs will patrol the general area; NCPD Homeland Security squads will employ portable radiation detectors on site.
