Valley Stream (WALK) - Malverne High School had crisis intervention counselors on duty yesterday to help students deal with the painful loss of one of their friends.
The teenager killed in a car crash on West Merrick Road in Valley Stream Monday night has been identified as Malverne sophomore Cindy Garcia of Lynbrook. Cindy, 15, and her sister Elizabeth Garcia Gamez, 13, were passengers in a Toyota that collided with an oncoming sedan that apparently made a U-turn in front of them.
Cindy was pronounced dead at Winthrop-University Hospital an hour after the crash. Police say Elizabeth is in critical condition with severe head and body injuries. Their 19-year-old cousin, who was at the wheel of the Toyota, was not hurt, nor was the driver of the other car. The drivers' names have not been released.
The girls were reportedly on their way home from a rehearsal for Cindy's upcoming Sweet 16 celebration when the crash happened. Elizabeth is a student at Howard T. Herber Middle School in Malverne.
Police say they don't expect to file any criminal charges in connection with the crash, although the investigation is ongoing.
