Jamaica - (WALK) The Long Island Rail Road is prepared to transport car-loads of Long Islanders to New Year's celebrations in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Their principle strategy for ensuring swift, safe travel is arithmetic: adding trains and subtracting alcohol.
The LIRR is adding 11 extra eastbound trains from Penn Station Tuesday afternoon, and adding 20 westbound trains to Penn Station and Atlantic Terminal. The LIRR is also banning alcohol on trains, at stations and on platforms between Noon Tuesday, and Noon on Wednesday, New Year's Day, according to officials.
City officials say New York native, and U.S. Supreme Court Justice, Sonia Sotomayor will lead the countdown in Times Square to welcome 2014, and trains to Atlantic Terminal will serve those who plan to attend the New Year's Eve concert by Long Island neighbor Billy Joel at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
19 extra eastbound trains will also be available during early hours of New Year's Day, from Penn Station and Atlantic Terminal.
