Cedarhurst (WALK) - A boy who should have started the 6th grade with classmates today was instead mourned by hundreds of friends and family at a memorial service on Sunday.
Aaron Tepfer of Cedarhurst, the boy who was caught in a boat's propeller in the water off the Cedarhurst Yacht Club on Friday, died of his injuries a day later. Aaron, 10, was initially listed in serious condition but was pronounced dead just after midnight on Saturday morning.
Police say that Aaron was tubing with several other children on Friday afternoon when he fell off his tube, and a friend's father stopped his boat nearby to pick the boy up. As Aaron tried to climb on board the boat, he reportedly became caught in the boat's propeller and was pulled under the water. The friend's father grabbed Aaron's life vest and kept his head above water until first responders arrived and freed him, detectives say.
The service for Aaron was held at the Yeshiva Darchei Torah in Far Rockaway, Queens, where his mother is reportedly a teacher and the boy was a student.
Aaron is survived by both of his parents and six siblings, according to school officials. The exact nature of his injuries has not been released.
