North Hills (WALK) - From now on, when drivers travel over the Long Island Expressway on New Hyde Park Road, they'll be going over the Police Officer Joseph P. Olivieri Jr. Memorial Bridge.
The bridge was renamed yesterday in honor of Olivieri, who died last year in the line of duty. Over 100 friends, relatives and fellow officers attended a dedication ceremony at Nassau Police Headquarters in Mineola, followed by a sign unveiling on the shoulder of the LIE.
Olivieri was a 43-year-old father of two from Middle Island. The 13-year veteran of the force was struck by a car on the LIE in North Hills as he tried to help victims of a car crash that investigators blame on an alleged drunk driver. As Olivieri crossed the highway on foot to get to the accident, he was struck by another vehicle.
James Ryan of Oakdale, 25, has pleaded not guilty.
