Patchogue (WALK) - As a polar vortex descends on Long Island and the wind chill drops below zero, county officials are concerned about the homeless.
Sheltering has been made available at several service centers in Suffolk County from Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 3 PM. The centers are located at:
- 2 South 2nd Street, Deer Park
- 80 Middle Country Road, Coram
- 200 Wireless Blvd, Hauppauge 11788
- 893 East Main Street, Riverhead 11901
Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone says that anyone who is without shelter during the bitter cold weather can contact the county's Temporary Housing Assistance Unit at (631) 854-9517 between 8 AM and 4 PM from Monday through Friday. After 4:30 PM and on weekends, the Suffolk Department of Social Services Emergency Services Unit can be contacted at (631) 854-9100.
In Nassau, the Warm Bed Hotline is available for assistance at (866) WARM-BED.
Bellone says that heat assistance is also available in Suffolk. If you’re out of home heating fuel or in need of an emergency burner repair you can call the Suffolk County Department of Social Services Home Energy Assistance Program at (631) 853-8820, between 8 AM-4 PM. the Department of Social Services Emergency Services Unit can be contacted after 4:30 PM and on weekends.
