Gun vs. Machete: Machete Wins

Brentwood (WALK) - Police are searching for the would-be robber who got the surprise of his life when he tried to hold up a local deli.

The gunman, who fired a warning shot when he entered the Stop & Shop Deli on Crooked Hill Road in Brentwood back on September 25th, was chased away by a deli clerk who pulled a machete out from the under the counter. The clerk, whose name has not been released by police, followed the gunman out of the store and chased him through the parking lot.

Police say the clerk pulled out the machete even though he was being held at gunpoint, and the robber had already fired a shot into the wall. That was apparently the only time he fired.

The suspect was wearing a mask, but witnesses tell police he was a young, black man with a thin build, about 5'1" tall. He was wearing a gray mask, black running-style top with white stripes on the sleeves, dark pants and black-and-white sneakers. Images were captured by a store security camera (pictured at left).

Anyone with information about this crime could be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000 for tips that lead to an arrest. If you can help, contact Suffolk Crime Stoppers at (800) 220-TIPS. Police promise to keep all calls confidential.
