Riverhead - (WALK) A former Long Island middle school gym teacher must register as a sex offender after admitting to using his cell phone to record video of female students in their locker room.
Thomas Sheppard, 28, of Speonk, was employed by Westhampton Beach Middle School. He was accused after a report of "suspicious activity" on February 26, and arrested by State Police in March and indicted in April, according to Suffolk prosecutors.
Sheppard admitted placing his cell phone in the girls' locker room and recording seven of his students.
"It was clear to us from the beginning the recording of these girls was not inadvertant as the defendant first claimed," said Suffolk District Attorney Thomas Spota.
Sheppard entered a guilty plea at Suffolk County Court in Riverhead Wednesday. He will lose his teaching license, and is expected to be sentenced to five year's probation and be registered as a sex offender when sentenced in December.
Sheppard resigned from his teaching job Monday, he had been suspended without pay during his court procedings. Sentencing is scheduled for December 18.
