Fire at LI Apartment Complex Drives Dozens into Cold

East Northport - (WALK)  Eight residents of an East Northport apartment complex are safe and warm today after being driven by fire from their homes and forced into snow and frigid temperatures Friday.

The fire raced through a complex of apartments and businesses at 376 Larkfield Road at approximately 3:00 p.m.  A total of 52 residents of 25 apartments were evacuated, and the fire was extinguished in less than an hour, said Suffolk police.

Most of the evacuees were returned to their homes after gas and electrical service was restored, at about 7:30 p.m.  Eight residents of four apartments were relocated by local Salvation Army and Red Cross chapters and sheltered overnight, said police.

The exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but investigators say the fire originated in the rear, work-area of Vacuum Cleaners Sales and Service, and is regarded as non-criminal  The apartments above and behind the business were threatened, said police Saturday.

Four fire departments responded to the call, there were no injuries reported during the incident, said police.
