East End Brush Fires Doused Despite Fierce Winds

Eastport (WALK) - The weather was windy and conditions were hot on Long Island's East End as first responders battled brush fires for much of Wednesday afternoon.

Flames were reported in several areas, including Westhampton, Bridgehampton and Eastport, where conditions were probably the worst. The Eastport Fire Department says it battled three separate fires, located on Old Country Road, Eastport-Manor Road and Sabrina Drive.

Several homes had to be evacuated on Sabrina Drive, where no buildings were damaged but fencing, exterior furniture and a pool cover were destroyed at two homes. Brookhaven Town fire marshals are still investigating what sparked the fires.

The blaze in Bridgehampton reportedly started accidentally when someone tried to  light a wood-burning pizza oven outside the private Hayground School. Students and staff evacuated the building but there was no damage.

No injuries were reported in any of the fires.
