Lake Ronkonkoma (WALK) - A once popular Long Island restaurant and catering hall is going under the wrecking ball.
Demolition began yesterday on the Bavarian Inn in Lake Ronkonkoma. During its heyday, it was one of the most popular wedding and party venues in Suffolk but flooding from nearby Lake Ronkonkoma drove it out of business six years ago.
The property then became a graffiti-covered eyesore, popular as a hangout for young people and the homeless. It was finally seized by Suffolk County for nonpayment of taxes. The demolition will cost the county just under $400,000.
What's next for the property is still up in the air. Some neighbors say they'd like to see a quiet park go up on the site, but some lawmakers suggest a revenue-generating operation like kayak rentals or fishing, to cover the cost of the property's back taxes and demolition, as well as future upkeep.
The demolition includes asbestos removal and is expected to take about two weeks.
