West Babylon - (WALK) A Long Island bookkeeper took hundreds of thousands of dollars from her employer, money she used to purchase shoes, clothes and jewelry, according to Nassau County prosecutors.
Onesta Reyes, 49, of West Babylon, was employed as a bookkeeper by a contracting company in Great Neck. She pleaded guilty to stealing more than $316,000 from the business, then using the money for personal purchases, said Nassau District Attorney Kathleen Rice Friday.
Between January 2011 and May 2012, Reyes used her access to the company's payroll system to inflate her salary from $48,000 to $239,893, and to reimburse herself for fraudulent expenses. Reyes also "created" an employee and pocketed a salary of $22,729 for the last three months of 2011, according to a statement from the DA's office.
Reyes pleaded guilty to grand larceny charges and is schedule to be sentenced June 11. Prosecutors suggest Reyes serve two to six years behind bars.
