Montauk (WALK) - Police can't confirm anything yet, but a body found in the Atlantic Ocean off Montauk Point on Sunday is believed to be that of a missing Ronkonkoma man.
A search had been under way for the 27-year-old man, who was reported missing by his family the day before the body turned up. His name has not been released yet by police.
The man's car was found at Montauk Point State Park, near the lighthouse, but investigators aren't saying why he might have been in the area.
A boater reportedly found the body floating in the water on Sunday, about a mile or two off Montauk Point. The remains were later pulled from the ocean by the U.S. Coast Guard.
State parks police, the Suffolk Sheriff's Department, marine police, police dogs and other agencies all took part in the search for the missing man.
An autopsy will be conducted on the body to confirm identification and a cause of death. Anyone who might have information about the case is asked to contact parks police at (631) 321-3700. All calls will be kept confidential.
