Bank Robber Hails a Cab in Suffolk

West Islip (WALK) - A cab driver in Suffolk became an unwilling accomplice to a bank robbery in Suffolk County yesterday.

Police say that a man who'd just robbed a Bank of America branch on Montauk Highway in West Islip then jumped into a taxi and forced the driver to take him to the Babylon train station, where he made a clean getaway. It happened around 10 AM on Tuesday.

Witnesses say the suspect claimed to have a gun and demanded cash from two tellers, then left the bank after it was handed over. Before going inside, he apparently had told the unwitting cabbie to wait for him.

The cab driver wasn't hurt, nor was anyone in the bank.

The suspect is described as a caucasian male, about 5'10" and between 50 and 60 years old with a heavy build and waering a dark jacket and dark-colored knit hat.

Anyone with information is asked about this bank robbery is asked to call Suffolk Crime Stoppers anonymously at (800) 220-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.
