Another Distraction Burglary in Nassau

Valley Stream (WALK) - The recent string of distraction burglaries continues in Nassau County.

An elderly couple was robbed on Monday while being visited by a man who claimed to be from the area water company. Police say the man knocked on their door on North Cottage Avenue and told the couple, both 81 years old, that he needed to check the water pressure in the basement of the home, and went downstairs with both homeowners. The suspect spent about 15 minutes in the basement with the victims, during which time an accomplice entered the house and stole money.

The couple didn't discover the money missing until the next day and then called both police and the water company, which said they did not send any employees into the neighborhood the day before.

The suspect is described as a white man, 30 to 40 years old, with an average build and about 5'10" tall. He had dark hair and was wearing a light colored tee shirt, shorts and a lanyard around his neck.

Detectives ask anyone who might have information about this crime to please contact Nassau Crime Stoppers at 1 (800) 244-TIPS. All callers can remain anonymous.
