Lindenhurst (WALK) - They say crime never pays in the end, and an alleged shoplifter may have learned that the hard way yesterday.
A Central Islip man is in the hospital with a leg fracture after he allegedly swiped products from a Rite Aid store on North Wellwood Avenue in Lindenhurst. Police say Douglas Richmond, 28, was hit by an SUV as he tried to cross Sunrise Highway after fleeing the store.
Richmond had allegedly helped himself to miscellaneous items, like hair products and cosmetics, and then made a run for it. Police say his injuries are life-threatening.
A 60-year-old grandmother from West Babylon was driving the SUV, with her 3-year-old granddaughter also in the vehicle. Both were taken to the hospital but had just minor injuries, according to police.
Richmond is charged with petit larceny.
