Mineola (WALK) - Police say they've found the owner of the minivan that struck and killed a girl in Levittown early Sunday and then left her to die in the street.
Michael Elardo of Syosset is due in court this morning. Elardo, 48, turned himself in to police one day after the fatal accident, according to investigators.
Bryanna Soplin was killed just after midnight while trying to cross Hempstead Turnpike. Witnesses told detectives that Bryanna, 13, was struck by a blue Chrysler Town and Country minivan that continued traveling east before turning north on the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway. The driver never stopped, according to police.
Authorities say Bryanna lived about 2 miles from the crash scene. They believe she may have been trying to get to her grandfather's house when she was hit.
Elardo is charged with leaving the scene of an incident. Authorities aren't saying if they've located the minivan or if Elardo might face additional charges.
