Alleged Copper Thief Nabbed on the East End

Remsenburg (WALK) - Police say a burglary spree has ended with the arrest of a serial copper thief.

Jonathan Hodgdon of Mastic is accused of stealing copper pipes and other metal from outside around two dozen houses in Quogue, Westhampton and elsewhere around the town of Southampton, which he would then sell for scrap at local recycling centers. Police say he was caught red-handed this week, cutting and stealing copper piping from outside a home on Old Mill Lane in Remsenburg.

The suspect was brazen, according to investigators. Hodgdon (pictured at left) was caught in the act around 2 PM Monday afternoon, in broad daylight. Hodgdon allegedly cased neighborhoods before the thefts and targeted vacant vacation homes.

The Remsenburg home where the suspect was apprehended was actually buglarized twice. Southampton Town Piping was first stolen at the house back on September 28th, leaving a water leak that did about $9,000 in damage. The homeowners recently made repairs, and Hodgdon went back to the house on Monday to cut out the new pipes, according to investigators.

Hodgdon, 21, is facing charges related to 9 burglaries, including grand larceny and criminal mischief, but the investigation continues and detectives say they expect more charges will be filed. Anyone with information is asked to contact Southampton Police at (631) 702-2230. All calls will be kept confidential.
